Summary

Organised for the first time in Asia, the International Association of Universities (IAU) conducted the IAU Collaborative Workshop: A three-step activity to envision higher education for EFA locally, held in Kathmandu, Nepal on 6-7 December 2012. It was organised in collaboration with the Tribhuvan University, an IAU Member.

The overall aim of the IAU Workshop is to provide an analysis of the context and propose means to strengthen the engagement of the higher education sector in EFA locally. It provides an organised collaborative forum to discuss ways on how to strengthen higher education’s contribution to achieving the EFA goals. Participants are challenged to think ‘out of the box’ on how to better and concretely engage higher education in EFA and to produce a document on how to move forward in this domain. The Kathmandu Workshop brought together 57 high-level representatives from five universities, the Ministries of Education and Finance, UNESCO, and various local NGOs working in EFA from Nepal.

This Final Report is validated by the participants. It contains:

  • Recommendations;
  • Results from the discussion groups on how research, teaching and community service can better contribute to achieving EFA in the respective countries;
  • Presentations;
  • List of participants

Other workshops have been conducted in Cuernavaca, Mexico, Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso and Nairobi, Kenya.
